Blasting cap found in Uniontown student's bag
UNIONTOWN, Pa. -- A 13-year-old Fayette County boy is facing charges after a potentially explosive device was found inside his duffel bag.
Albert-Gallatin Superintendent Carl Bezjak said a blasting cap was found inside the student's bag at dismissal Thursday afternoon.
“At this time, there was no intent to harm anyone as we know it,” Bezjak said. “It was more of a prank, an unfortunate prank that does happen in schools from time to time.”
The bomb squad was called in to search Albert-Gallatin South Middle School, but nothing was found.
Bezjak said a student came forward with information about the incident.
“Monsters hide in the dark and if we don’t get this kind of information, then we can’t act to prevent it,” Bezjak said. “What would happen if this information didn’t come forward? That is the most fearful part of this. I’m proud of the kids that came forth and told on them. They shouldn’t be scared of anything like that that could hurt another child.”
Channel 11's Rick Earle learned the boy is charged with possession of blasting caps and drugs. Police said they also plan to search the boy's home.
The district released the following statement to parents:
"Attention Parents: There was an incident that occurred at Albert Gallatin South Middle School during student dismissal on Thursday, February 9, 2012. School officials, district police and the PA state police have investigated this incident. The school has been deemed secure and safe and classes will resume as normal on Friday, February 10, 2012. A letter will also be sent home to further explain this incident."
Kimberly Howell said she kept her daughter home from school on Friday as a precaution.
“I was a little nervous, and she was still scared,” Howell said. “I was trying to keep it from her, but she heard me talking to my grandmother. She was kind of freaked out.”
